Synods and Presbyteries

Presbyterian churches are found in every state in the United States of America (as well as in Puerto Rico, which is not a state!). That's why our church is called the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Our denomination has more than 11,000 congregations.

Our church is divided into smaller sections, too. The different colored parts of this map show the 16 synods of the PC(USA). Move your cursor over the map to see the names of the synods. Some synod names describe something about the synod, like Synod of the Sun. Some use an idea from the Bible, like the Synod of Living Waters or the Synod of the Trinity (By the way, trinity is a popular name. There's a presbytery with that name, too). Others tell where the synod is, like the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii.

Synods are made up of several presbyteries. There are 173 presbyteries. Click on the synod to see a list of presbyteries in that synod. Presbyteries often choose a name that describes where the presbytery is. Sometimes it's a state name like Alaska or Nevada. But sometimes it's not so easy to tell where the presbytery is just by its name. Can you find Providence or Lackawanna or Genesee Valley?

Presbyteries are made up of many churches. Click on a presbytery name to go to that presbytery's Web site. On most presbytery Web sites, you can find a list of the names of the congregations in that presbytery. See if you can find the name of your church!
